Sue Wassall

Sue qualified in 1983 and remains as passionate as ever about caring for your eyes. During her career, Sue has worked for both high street chains and independent opticians, and quickly realised the benefits to customers of the independent approach. As the owner and lead optometrist of Optomeyes Eyecare, Sue focuses on what’s best for each individual customer without any distracting targets or time pressures. Sue has been running both practices since February 1999 and has been helping people all over Hampshire since.

Sue is an active member of the local communities of Wickham and Lee-on-the-Solent. When she’s not looking after your eyes, Sue enjoys walking in the countryside, watching rugby, cycling and spending quality time with family and friends.

Penny Bowen-Thomas

During her 20 years in the profession, Penny has worked for both high street chains and independent opticians, including supervising Pre-registration students and practice management.

Penny is married to Oliver, an optometrist at a private Ophthalmic hospital, and mum to two very active boys and can often be found on the side of a sports pitch. Penny enjoys walking and tries to run and keep fit.

If Penny gets a chance to relax she enjoys reading and jigsaws!

Helen Johnson

In the early stages of her career, Helen worked for multiples. After 10 years she moved into working with independent practices as she preferred the variety of work along with the opportunity to build long term relationships with both patients and practice staff. As an ex nurse/ midwife Helen is interested in pathology and took this further by specialising in dry eye disease.

In her spare time Helen volunteers with local conservation groups and helped neighbours shielding locally during the pandemic.

Helen loves gardening and getting outdoors, as well as getting to the beach with her board. She also enjoys a good game of rugby, especially if Ireland is playing!

Mohammed Asghar

Mohammed has been working in and around the southern counties for the last 7 years and has experience working in independents, multiples and has also worked in the corneal clinic at Salisbury Hospital.

Passionate about giving the best and thorough eye care to all of his patients, Mohammed has further enhanced his knowledge in the field and is accredited to perform Post cataract op checks, minor eye condition services, fit specialist contact lenses.

Mohammed enjoys spending time with his wife and 2 kids, enjoys eating out, travelling and growing his own veg!

Richard Candlin Optometrist

Richard started his career as a Dispensing Optician and practice manager, before moving on to be a Contact Lens Optician for ten years. In 2007 he qualified as an Optometrist, achieving a long-standing ambition. Since then he has worked in a variety of independent practices in England and Scotland. He enjoys the work variety in independent practice, building up long-term rapport with patients and practice staff. Richards enjoys helping people get the most from their eyes and is especially interested in contact lenses and dry eye conditions.

In his spare time, Richard is involved as a leader of children’s work at his local church.

He actively races sailing dinghies and enjoys photography and walking. The big outdoors is great!

Dispensing Team

Sophie Sales
General Manager

Sophie joined the team in March 2022 with over 13 years of management experience. Sophie grew up in Plymouth before moving to Surrey at 16 which is where she worked for a large retail company for just over 14 years before getting married and buying a house by the sea. Sophie oversees the day-to-day running of both practices with a keen eye on ensuring you always have a positive experience of visiting either practice whether for an eye test, to buy new specs or contact lenses or for any other visit. 

Sophie now has two children and one very fluffy golden retriever (thankfully Tracy can help with this!!)

When the demands of a young family allow her the time, Sophie is content with a good book and a glass of red wine.

Tracey Taylor
Frame and Lens Consultant
Tracey has over 30 years experience as a Dispensing Optician having qualified in 1986.

Throughout her career she’s worked predominantly in independent practices, with a short period in a high street chain prior to lockdown. Tracey is keen to provide the best possible service and outcomes for all her customers, ensuring that all lens and frame options are explored.

Having retrained as a Dog Groomer, Tracey now works 2 days a week at Optomeyes and the rest of the week grooming. Her other interests include dog walking, Racket Ball and Yoga.
Heather Bick
Frame and Lens Consultant
Heather has worked in the local area for nearly 30 years and has extensive experience in finding the perfect frame and lens combination to suit your individual requirements. Heather treats every one of her customers as she would her own family; making sure you leave with the best eyewear at a price you can afford. Heather is never afraid to suggest a new look for you that will impress your own family and friends.
In her spare time, Heather enjoys gardening, cycling, walking and spending time with her grandchildren and is partial to the odd glass of chardonnay, especially when the grandchildren go home.

Phillippa Stapleton

Dispensing Optician

Phillippa joined the team in 2023, she qualified as a Dispensing Optician in 2001 and has worked in Independent Opticians across the south and for the Hospital Eye Service in Southampton.


She enjoys getting to know our patients and finding the best frame and lens combinations to suit their needs (and their budget!)


In her spare time, she enjoys horse riding, going to see live bands and socialising with family and friends. Always available for a chat!



Client Care Consultant

Karen joined the team in Sept 2023 and has a background of administrative experience including working in a Solicitors and a Special Needs School and enjoys working in a customer facing role.


When not working, Karen loves spending time with her family and friends and walking her dog, dancing and holidays. She is often seen with her husband at their allotment.

Lucy Parkinson
Client Care Consultant

Coming from a very different background in Musical theatre Lucy joined the practice in May.


Alongside working here, she teaches drama at a local youth theatre where no two days are ever the same. She can often be found sorting scripts, finding costumes, and brushing up on her own acting technique.

Sue has been part of the team since 2015, having taken early retirement from Hampshire Social Services after 15 years service. Sue saw our advert and, not feeling ready to retire completely, applied and joined the team.


In the early days, Sue’s biggest challenge was meeting patients ‘face to face’ and these days is one of the parts of her job she enjoys the most.

In 2020, Sue became a grandmother for the first time. In addition to spending time with her family she enjoys looking after and riding her horses with her daughter.


Lynn joined the team in 2018. After 25 years working for NatWest, and 13 years as joint owner of local haberdashery business, coming to work in Optics was a complete change of direction.


Lynn enjoys getting to know our clients and offering the friendly service we are known for, which sees clients return year after year.


In her spare time, Lynn enjoys doing anything crafty, particularly quilting and even the odd woodwork creation with her husband.  She also loves spending time with her family.


Hayley started work as a receptionist in an independent opticians where she remained for 6 years. She then took a break from optics, but continued to work in customer facing roles in travel, tourism and hospitality. Over the years Hayley has lived in Dubai,  Aberdeen & Plymouth before settling in the local area.


Hayley joined the team in April 2016 and enjoys the small community feel of Lee-on-the-Solent and getting to know many of our regular patients, who sometimes just call in for a chat.


Outside of work, Hayley enjoys time with family and friends, holidays and long walks with her Cocker Spaniel. She describes herself as a book lover with a passion for chocolate!


Alison has joined the team in 2016 bringing with her a wealth of administrative experience including working in the MoD and for the NHS as a GP receptionist. Alison has a passion for maintaining the excellent service standards and customer experience that we are famous for, ensuring patients come back year after year.


When she’s not working, Alison is often spotted walking her dog, socialising with friends and spending time with her family. Our very own Imelda Marcos, Alison’s other favourite pastime is adding to her growing collection of shoes and handbags.
