Children’s eye tests
About 80% of your child’s learning is done visually, yet it’s thought one in five schoolchildren has an undetected eye problem. Letting us take care of your family’s eye examinations means you can be sure your child isn’t struggling with an undiagnosed sight problem. This means peace of mind for you, and one less thing to worry about.
It’s recommended all children have a sight test by the age of 4, but it’s never too early to get your child checked, particularly if you notice anything that suggests they may be struggling with their sight. This could include your children squinting at things, rubbing their eyes a lot and complaining of headaches. As a parent, if you need glasses or contact lenses it’s especially important to have your child’s sight checked regularly.
Do children need to be able to read before they have an eye test?
This is a common question as people often think children need to be able
to read before they can have their eyes tested. However, this is not the case.
Irrespective of your child’s age, the Optomeyes team can look after your child’s vision by assessing the strength of their eyes and eye muscles. Your child will be completely unaware of what’s going on while we help you keep them entertained.
When your child visits the practice, we try to ensure they are as relaxed as possible. We use symbols, colours and matching games instead of a letters chart, and
children are often intrigued by our screens and machinery. Your child can have
fun exploring in a friendly, welcoming environment, making the appointment
less stressful for mums and dads as well!
Eye examinations are free for under 16s and under 19s still in full-time education,
so you can rest assured that your child’s eyes are healthy and working as best
they can without any expense.
If your child does need glasses, they can choose from a great range of frames specifically designed for children. With a variety of materials and colours to choose from, plenty of which are covered by the NHS voucher, you’ll be able to find a pair your child will love and often they won’t cost you a penny. If your child would rather use contact lenses, we have many options for you to consider. Your child will be taught how to use and care for their lenses, enabling them to be independent.
We offer a dedicated appointment for this, and can answer any questions you,
or they, may have. They can also come back to us for help and tips as often as
they like. We find most children are mature enough from around 12 years of age although children as young as 8 can benefit from our Mi-Sight contact lenses for Myopia Management. Click here to read more.
