Don’t forget your eye health this new year

January is the time of year many people make commitments to take more care of their health, take up a new hobby, get it or update their image. If that’s you, don’t forget your eyes! Increased screen time, less time outdoors and even just the passing of time are just three reasons why you need to give your eye health some attention.

Data gathered by the College of Optometrists during the 2020 lockdown found that more than 40% of respondents felt their eyesight had deteriorated during the pandemic whilst, a fifth felt increased screen time had damaged their eyes. Despite this, 59% of respondents hadn’t, at that point, booked an appointment with their optician for a new sight test.

More recently, in 2021, another survey by the College of Optometrists found that more than a third of drivers questioned didn’t have regular sight tests; whilst a fifth didn’t routinely wear their prescribed specs when driving.

So why should you set aside an hour this new year to check your eye health?

More than just a sight test

An overwhelming majority of sight loss in the UK could be prevented through the early identification and treatment of conditions including macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetes and cataracts.

Meanwhile, many people who need glasses for the first time are shocked at the difference to their vision when they initially try their newly prescribed specs as their sight deterioration has been a gradual process.

During your regular eye examination, your optometrist will consider more than just how well you can see. In addition to your ability to read letters on the sight test chart, a detailed examination of your eye health is carried out. This can allow your optometrist to spot changes to your overall eye health and indicators of other health conditions that may not yet be causing you to experience symptoms.

Choosing to have an OCT scan in addition to your standard eye examination enhances your optometrist’s view beyond the surface of your eye, further enhancing their ability to spot tiny changes to the health of your eyes, long before your vision is affected.

Give your resolutions a sporting chance

If getting fit and doing more exercise is on your to do list in 2022 then you’ll want to make sure your eyes are up to the challenge! After all, the more you enjoy what you’re doing, the more likely you will stick with it into February and beyond.

If your new activities take you outdoors, you’ll want to make sure you have the right kind of eyewear to ensure you can see properly whatever the weather. Even in the winter, you need to protect your eyes from sun damage which means you’ll need quality sunglasses that reduce glare and offer UV protection without cutting out the light.

Snow and watersports call for a different kind of eye protection that will stand up to the demands of the environment you’re using them in.

From prescription swim goggles to ski masks, sunnies to contact lenses, we can help you find the perfect solution to help you keep your fitness resolutions on track.

Up your style game

Did you promise yourself a style revamp after almost two years in loungewear? Maybe you’re bored of how you look on video calls and want to mix it up a bit? Perhaps you’d like a fresh new look for weekends, high days and holidays?

We can all get a bit bored wearing the same clothes day in, day out so it stands to reason that you probably want to mix up your choice of specs from time to time. Meanwhile, the increased use of video conferencing has paved the way for a new trend in bold frames that make an impact through the use of eye-catching shapes or colours. But being stylish doesn’t mean compromising your eye health.

With travel and socialising back on the agenda, speak to our dispensing opticians and find the perfect new frame to freshen up your look. Our staff aren’t just trained to make sure your glasses are a great fit, they are also trained to advise on frame colour, size and shape allowing you to buy with confidence.

At Optomeyes Eyecare we stock a wide selection of designer frames with something for everyone.

Go specs free

If you fancy a break from glasses, why not give contact lenses a go?

We often speak to people who tried contact lenses in the past but didn’t get on with them. Whilst it’s true that some people simply don’t suit contacts, there are lots of varieties available these days so there’s often a choice to suit you.
