Happy to fly solo! New survey reveals commercial opticians put patients under pressure – but independents like Optomeyes are in a league of their own

48% of optometrists feel under pressure to rush sight tests and reduce patient care. 33% also said they felt under commercial pressure to sell certain frames or contact lenses that would make more money for the business.

These revelations have come from research just released by the General Optical Council (GOC), who also reported that overall job satisfaction levels are down for the third year in a row.  55 per cent of respondents reported feeling satisfied in their role during 2025, compared to 62 per cent in 2023 and 58 per cent in 2024.

Optomeyes-Eyecare owner Sue Wassall said the research had reinforced her belief in the importance of being an independent, and reminded her how important her long-standing philosophy to do whatever is best for the patient really is.

Sue said: “It is no surprise to me that optometrists working in multiples feel under so much pressure to rush patients through their sight tests and up sell products.

“I’ve never wanted a visit to Optomeyes to feel like a visit to a multiple. I want our customers to feel thoroughly looked after.   A visit to us is about eye health and care, and  it deserves time and focus.

“As an independent, we have free rein to stock whatever frames and products we wish.  We have never targeted staff to sell a certain amount of a particular product.  We monitor which ranges are selling, but that’s about it.

“Many of our optometrists have been here for over ten years, some fifteen years, and that shows me they are happy working in a patient centred environment with little commercial pressure.  They can do what they enjoy doing best – giving quality care and expertise in a calm and unhurried way.”

Sue concluded: “There are fewer independent lefts that offer private, unrushed care in an affordable way.  I am really proud to be one of them.”

Tips for Finding an Optometrist

  • Ask for referrals: Get recommendations from people you trust, such as friends, family, or your GP.
  • Check online reviews: Look at online reviews for insights into other patients’ experiences, including the quality of care and customer service.
  • Review the practice’s qualifications: Ensure the optometrists are well-trained
  • Enquire about technology: Ask if the practice uses modern equipment for eye exams, as this can indicate a commitment to up-to-date care.

Assessing the patient experience

  • Gauge the staff’s attitude: The office staff should be friendly, helpful, and able to answer your questions.
  • Assess the environment: The practice should feel welcoming and well-maintained, not cluttered or overly clinical.
  • Check communication style: During an appointment, the optometrist should explain things clearly, be patient, and listen to you respectfully.
  • Ensure you don’t feel pressured: A good optometrist will not pressure you into buying products or services you don’t need.
