How can I protect my eyes during outdoor activities?

Outdoor activities are fun to do all year round. Whether it’s a bike ride in the summer or skiing in the winter, they are good exercise and a chance to get some fresh air. In this blog, we look at how the elements can affect your eyes and how to protect them when taking part in activities outside.

1. Wear goggles when on the slopes

Did you know that your eyes are the most vulnerable part of your body when it comes to sun exposure? Winter sports often require spending extended periods in the mountains where harmful UV rays bounce off the snow, directly into your eyes. It is hugely important to wear goggles with high UV protection.

Goggles with photochromic lenses are widely available on the market. These have a unique ability to darken in sunlight and are powerful in shielding your eyes from UV rays.

2. Protect against dust

Many outdoor activities can risk dust or grit entering your eyes. Not only can this be uncomfortable, but it can also cause infection and scarring if not dealt with appropriately.

Wearing wraparound glasses or goggles with foam padding creates a barrier that shields your eyes from wind and debris.

3. Choose sunglasses with high UV protection

We’ve touched on the importance of UV protection when carrying out activities around reflective surfaces such as snow. Wearing sunglasses with high UV protection is important when taking part in other outdoor activities such as running, cycling or climbing.

There are often activity-specific sunglasses that focus on comfort as well as UV protection. Make sure to choose a pair that feels right for you, while also prioritising sun safety.

4. Wear a hat

For extra eye protection, wear a hat with a wide brim to shade your face from the sun. Similarly to the sunglasses, there are a range of options available depending on the type of exercise you’re completing.

Make sure that you’re putting safety first when choosing the headwear for you and prioritise how you can best keep your eyes away from the sun.

4. Use eye drops

Exercising outdoors can cause your eyes to feel irritable. It could be that they feel dry due to windy conditions, or itchy from pollens and dust in the air.

Carrying eye drops can help add moisture to your eyes, relieving these symptoms.
