“Finding out about your lifestyle, work and hobbies is an important part of our eye examinations. We want to understand how you use your eyes on a daily basis so we can recommend the best sight correction for your situation. Then we’ll make decisions together about what’s best for you.”

Sue Wassall, Optometrist

NHS optical vouchers

Some people are also entitled to an NHS optical voucher to help towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses.

You are eligible for an NHS optical voucher towards the cost of your spectacles or contact lenses if you are:

  • Aged under 16
  • Aged 16, 17 or 18 and in full-time education
  • Eligible for an NHS complex lens voucher (your optician can advise on eligibility)
  • Receiving Income Support, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, or Universal Credit and meet the criteria
  • Or if other criteria apply to you

Please click here to see the NHS eye tests and optical vouchers website for the full list of eligibility for NHS optical vouchers.

How often can you have an NHS sight test?

It’s recommended that most people should have a routine eye health check and get their eyes tested every two years. If you are eligible for a free NHS sight test you will be entitled to have a free check every two years.

Your optometrist may recommend that you have a sight test more often than two years in some cases – such as if you are a child wearing glasses, you have diabetes or if you are aged 70 or over. Sight tests more often than every two years will be free on the NHS if they are clinically necessary.
