Relieve eye discomfort from hayfever this summer

Do you experience itchy or watery eyes throughout the summer months? Hayfever can have a huge impact on our daily lives, preventing us from enjoying a dog walk in the morning to playing sports outside.

With pollen levels rising and 1 in 5 of us now having an allergic reaction to pollen at some point in our lives, we want to help by providing some suggestions to relieving eye discomfort when it comes to hayfever.

Eye drops

Summertime brings good weather and longer days but it also means a lot more exposure to your eyes. From allergies to pollen to sand in the air and new creams on our faces, its easy for our eyes to feel irritated for one reason or another.

The natural reaction to eye irritation is to rub our eyes but doing so can result in damage and infection. Eye drops help to soothe irritated or dry eyes and can be bought over the counter at your opticians relatively cheaply.

A pollen barrier balm can also be useful for hayfever as it helps to catch pollen before it reaches your eyes. Regularly washing your hands as well as your clothes can also be helpful to remove traces of pollen.

We recommend that contact lens wearers suffering from hayfever use daily lenses, as these can easily be removed and disposed of along with traces of pollen they may have on them.

Sunglasses

Wearing a top quality protective sunglasses is a sure-fire way to look after your eyes. A quality pair of prescription sunglasses will provide a barrier to pollen, sand and of course UV rays.

Our most popular brand of sunglasses is Maui Jim. They use polarized lenses to offer protection from harmful UV light including UV A,B and C without obliterating the colours and detail of the landscape. The prescription range includes varifocals and there are styles suited to everyone, from the latest trends to something a little more classic.

Silhouette sunglasses offer excellent UV protection and are a high-quality design, meaning you can get the most from your money and continue using them year after year. The light weight frames provide maximum comfort and wearability, an element that draws loyal customers to this brand.

Maui Jim and Silhouette sunglasses are now available in both our Wickham and Lee-on-the-Solent practices.
